The Invisible Infrastructure That Moves the City – The Evolution and Future of Bicycle Parking
This exhibition presents a historical panel showcasing the serious problem of abandoned bicycles in the 1980s and the subsequent development of paid bicycle parking facilities. At the time, abandoned bicycles—numbering around one million nationwide—had become a major social issue. In response, municipalities and the private sector worked together to promote the establishment of paid parking facilities, embedding the principle of “beneficiary pays” into practice.
The exhibition also features before-and-after examples illustrating 50 years of bicycle parking development, including facility aging, reconstruction, and renewal, highlighting strategies for sustainable operation and management. As a modern solution to labor shortages, the display explains cashless systems such as online season ticket applications, QR code payments, and includes an actual payment machine.
In addition, it introduces a wide range of future-oriented updates, such as AI camera systems for detecting illegal parking, facilities accommodating large bicycles, and initiatives to improve traffic safety.

Through the development and renewal of bicycle parking
facilities around stations, safety and convenience will be
improved. In addition, temporary bicycle parking spaces
installed on sidewalks and other areas will be properly
upgraded or removed, thereby promoting the creation of a
safe and comfortable urban environment.
2) Flexibility in Layout and Capacity of Bicycle Parking Facilities
By renovating and upgrading bicycle parking facilities to expand the space allocated per bicycle, the facilities can accommodate larger bicycles and provide a more user-friendly parking environment.
3) Flexibility in Parking Fees to Encourage Optimal Use
By providing a range of fee options for bicycle parking around stations, fees for highly convenient locations will be set higher, while less convenient locations will be priced lower. This differentiation helps balance the overall usage environment.
